0.50 Balboa Coin – Panama Viejo

Panama, interestingly enough, uses US dollars as their currency, and have no notes of their own in circulation. However, they do have their own coins, and their currency Balboa, which are pegged 1:1 with the US dollar. So 0.25 Balboa would be equal to $0.25. I took this picture during a one week trip to Panama. I went for a debate conference and this picture was taken on the last day, a few hours before I was about to fly back to Canada. I got an Uber English, an actual Uber type in Panama with drivers that can speak English (if you go to Panama you’ll realize how rare that is), and told him about the currency project and that I wanted to go to a couple of places. He loved the idea and agreed! This was the last picture in Panama but also the toughest one, especially since we could not find where this exact location was for a good hour. Panama Viejo are the old ruins and no matter how many guides we asked over there, we always got a different answer. We knew it must be somewhere inside an old building, and after an hour we found it inside an old broken church type building. This was the last one in Panama and we had to quickly rush back to the hotel to change and go to the airport afterwards!
